Laird only wanted to rule his kingdom, as was his birthright. He may have acted a bit childish and femmy, he may have had the fashion sense of a Disney villain, but he never actually did anything wrong. At least, not until his birthright was stolen from him by one of the most ridiculous laws ever created. Considering he lives in the same country that crowned a princess based on how overly finicky she was, he probably should have seen that coming. When his brother Heath was crowned king instead, Laird swore to never take his shoes off until he got what was rightfully his. The bizarre oath was broken as soon as his daughter was born, which prompted him to declare his life to be over... until discovering that Heath had had a daughter as well. He then hatched a plot to bring Heath down, to show once and for all who should rightfully wear the crown.
